On April 22 at approximately 10:45 p.m. Michael Jennings, 45, of Denver was arrested for driving under the influence. Jennings was placed in the holding cell at Baca County Jail to make a phone call and await the booking process. Jennings was found approximately 20 minutes later unconscious in the cell. Upon arrival, Springfield EMT’s tried to revive Jennings at the jail. Jennings was pronounced dead at approximately midnight.
This case is under investigation by Baca County Coroner’s office, Baca County Sheriff’s Office and Colorado Bureau of Investigation. Cause of death is believed to be suicide. An autopsy will be performed under the authority of the sheriff’s office and Baca County Coroner.
On April 25, an autopsy was performed on Michael Jenning’s body. Cause of death was determined to be hanging. Jennings used a cord attached to the telephone in the holding cell at Baca County Jail on April 22 at approximately 11:45 p.m. Baca County Coroner Robert Morrow stated no other indications were found during the autopsy. We are waiting for toxicology reports to determine substance abuse such as alcohol or drugs.
